Chun Liao New Vessels
3 February to 11 March 2006
Chun Liao‘s elegant ceramics bring a contemporary sensibility to the oriental tradition of fine porcelain. Since graduating from the Royal College of Art in 1998
she has become well known for her minimal, yet expressive forms, the product both of extraordinary virtuosity and rigorous technical experimentation.
In this new collection of work Liao evokes a sense of movement, of things in a state of flux. The forms of the pots are more fluid than before, tapering softly
inwards to end in dynamic torn and folding rims. Chance continues to play a role in their embellishment, such as in the final resting points of the rods of silver
that punctuate walls and bases. In the case of the clear glazed pots, decorative green coloured trails result from seepage of the silver‘s component copper alloy.
There is also a sense of unpredictability in the way that the glaze thickens towards the base, as if threatening to flow away but arrested just in time.
Further nuances of form are orchestrated by her application of glaze colour. Profoundly different effects are produced by the use of a transparent glaze on
the white porcelain body, or due to the reflective quality of a bold glassy black, or in the richness of a jade-like green, as well as in her recent introduction
of a startling canary yellow.
