Tray Ground

9 September to 8 October 2005

Tray Ground is the theme for a collaborative exhibition of the work by Israeli born, Dutch resident furniture designer Jair Straschnow and Swiss born London based designer Hans Stofer.

The designers first met in 1999 at the Sandberg Institute (MA School of the Rietveld Academy) in Amsterdam and subsequently kept in touch. Both followed each other’s creative development, exchanged ideas and collaborated on projects such as ‘The Holy BlaBla ’ an alternative designers monograph self-published by blablapublishing; isbn 0-06-098915-7 (pbk). ‘The Holy BlaBla ’ experience strengthened their belief that the only way forward was to share their interests and viewpoints with an extended audience. Tray Ground evolved out of this insight and experience. It is to be understood as the first attempt to put some of their ideas into practice and to establish a context.

Concept:
To use the tubular, modular furniture structures designed and fabricated by Jair Straschnow which act as supports to hold standard-sized, mass-produced canteen trays. In some cases the trays will be used as display surfaces to present the investigative tableware by Hans Stofer, other pieces will be attached directly onto the bare tubular frames using magnets.

The work of both designers will be centred and developed around these canteen trays hence the proposed title of the show ‘Tray Ground ’.

This work is not about mass production. However it will be designed and built resourcefully both in terms of materials and processes.

“The work will be for sale - the smiles will be on us. ”
“We want to create stuff that will feed off each other, is resourceful, innovative and will stimulate our design sensibilities and perceptions. ”
