Nicholas Rena
Nicholas Rena‘s austere and imposing vessels are underpinned by a Modernist rationality. In his exploration of the formal
possibilities of the vessel, he creates fine tensions between outer mass and inner volume.
His <Transit Space> series of vessels are thin-walled, slip-cast forms, characterised by taut lines, slow curves and crisp flaring lips. The flaring shapes
of vessels that are open at each end also suggest the production of acoustic sound. Surfaces are left uncoloured, pure
and bone-white with a soft wax sheen. His ‘Habits of the Saints’ series of vessels are thick-walled, press moulded forms
with strongly coloured surfaces.
Born in 1963, Rena studied Architecture at Cambridge University and Ceramics and Glass at The Royal College of Art, London.
His work is in the Crafts Council Collection, London; the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; the Musee des Arts Decoratifs,
Paris; and the National Crafts Museum, Copenhagen.
He was shortlisted for the Jerwood Prize for the Applied Arts: Ceramics in 2001.
